Art (Year 10)

Course overview – Year 10

GCSE Art and Design (AQA Exam Board) is a two unit specification which enables students to actively
develop their creative ability, independently, in imaginative and intuitive ways.
Unit 1: Portfolio of Work (Controlled Assessment) 60%
Unit 2: Externally Set Task 40%
Throughout Year 10, students will concentrate on Unit 1 by developing their recording skills using acrylic
paint, watercolour and a number of different materials to experimenting with Still Life compositions.
Students can then develop their recordings towards an abstract piece and introduce textile techniques.
Students complete a contextual studies project based on a chosen contemporary artist where they
produce written and practical understanding upon reflection of their research. Students continue to
develop ideas by exploring their interests and experiment with a wide range of materials and techniques
working towards a final outcome at the end of Year 10.
At the beginning of the course students will need to purchase an ‘Art pack’ from the Department which
includes all the equipment needed to access the curriculum effectively. Across the academic year we
offer and encourage lunch time and after school sessions helping students achieve their maximum
potential within a safe and creative environment.

The students will be asked to complete 3 teacher led projects, which are based around, Drawing and
Painting, Textiles, Photography and 3D Ceramics. All work over Year 10 will have an impact upon the
student’s final GCSE grade. Year 10 is a more diagnostic course and helps with the more student-led
projects in Year 11.
