Transition [new year 7]

Moving to Secondary Phase

Welcome! Here at St Michael’s we understand the importance of being a learning community that lives its life according to the teachings of Christ and we support all young people in their journey from child to young adult. All members of the community are loved, valued and encouraged to grow in an atmosphere of mutual respect.

We hope you find all the information you need below for year 7 transition, but if you have any questions please feel free to get in touch. This page will be updated regularly so please watch this space.

What Are The Issues For New Pupils?

Pupils face a number of challenges and demands in any new secondary school, including:

  • Asking when they do not understand
  • Taking on more responsibility for their own work
  • Learning the difference between working and working hard
  • Sticking with topics, subjects or relationships they they find difficult
  • Keeping and organising notes, books and other equipment
  • Revising for exams
  • Understanding the relative importance of each piece of work
  • Completing more work at home independently
  • Meeting deadlines and managing longer pieces of work (e.g. coursework)
  • Not putting off till tomorrrow that which should be done today

Together we can support these young people to have a postivie and enjoyable experience.

We offer a lot of support in school, click the links to our Wellbeing and Chaplaincy pages.

At St Michael’s Catholic School we offer to provide your son/daughter with a locker. Pupils pay a fee of £30 and are given their own key which they should use to access materials and possessions they choose to leave in the lockers. Access to the lockers should not take place between lessons but at break and lunch time only.

At the beginning of September, a locker key payment of £30 will be required. This amount will cover the rental from year 7 until year 11. This will be added onto Parent Mail, so once you have activated your account in September, it can be paid for. Your son/daughter will then have a locker for the duration of their time here at St. Michael’s.

All students must return their locker key before the end of Year 11, regardless of whether they return for 6th form. Lockers have to be emptied and the key returned to their form tutor.

We understand that transition from Primary to Secondary is a new and challenging time for students; however we do expect students to be responsible for their own key.

Where a key is lost, access to the locker will be given at a convenient point (during break or at lunch times) and a replacement key will be ordered at a charge of £5.

It is advisable to the parents to make their own copy of the locker key and keep it at home.
